02. why san francisco
The church is the physical embodiment of Jesus which brings life, hope, peace, and joy to a hurting and broken world.
There are over 824,000 people living in the city of San Francisco, the 12th most populous city in the U.S. located in the heart of the fifth largest region in the country—the Bay Area (home to over 7 million people). San Francisco is a major technological, artistic and multi-cultural hub that stands as the financial and publishing center of the West Coast and a span of influence that reaches throughout the world (39% of the residents were born overseas).
The physical landscape of San Francisco is full of beaches, rolling hills, cable cars and spectacular bridges, however less than 180 active protestant churches remain. Seattle, WA is smaller in size and considered by many to be the least-churched city in the country, however, it has over twice as many churches than San Francisco.
In San Francisco, more than 98% of the population will not attend a church service this coming weekend.
“Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere.” ~ Jesus [Mark 16:15, NLT]
We believe God has a new plan for the people of this amazing city. The dream is not only to plant a church in the heart of San Francisco where people can find their way back to God, but to create a movement of churches throughout the city, the Bay Area and around the world that will effectively bring the gospel to some of the least-churched regions of the world.
“Our unchurched population [in the U.S.] is the largest mission field in the English-speaking world
and the fifth largest globally.”Lost in America, Clegg & Bird
